Challenge
South Bank University, part of the University of London had been granted funding to redevelop a substantial portion of its estate, conserving some Grade 2 listed buildings, and replacing some 1960’s buildings for the school of Social Sciences and Nursing with a single high rise facility. Construction work on had started, but detailed engineering was not complete and had to be accelerated to complete the design for immediate construction.
Solution
Bob lead the construction support team comprising, engineering consultants, the architect charged with accelerating the design, addressing any clarifications and requests for information from the contractor. Bob quickly set up site resident engineering support to resolve minor issues in the field, together with a lean approach to completing the detailed design, review, approval and issue for construction cycle.
Result
The construction delays were avoided through provision of site resident engineering support and coordinated prioritisation of engineer approved design elements required for construction in the next few days. In this way the materials and design supply chains were in step with one another for the remainder of the build. With the success of this Just-In-Time approach it was extended to the mechanical and electrical design finalisation and their respective supply chains.
