Challenge
Leyton 6th Form College Governors and Trustees wished to improve and grow their school through the governments initiative of Building Schools for the Future. The existing school was built in the 1930’s but no longer provided the facilities required for modern running a modern curriculum or providing adequate accommodation for the increasing numbers attending or anticipated in the school rolls over the coming decade. To meet this growth the school had submitted and had approved an outline business case for the expansion and improvement and now needed to complete the detailed case, submit it for approval and carry out preliminary enabling works for the phased expansion and improvements.
Solution
Bob lead the development team comprising, engineering consultants, an architect, and the senior responsible officer of the school to develop a detailed business case. This required detailed engineering assessments of the dilapidation schedule, sufficiency of existing structures, programming of the preliminary works and estimation of the associated costs.
Result
The business case for the development was developed and submitted in line with the education authority’s programme. As was to be expected the budget cost estimate grew significantly because of the assessments of the defects, dilapidation schedule and sufficiency of existing structures. However this detail enabled alternative less costly engineering solutions to be proposed to contain or reduce the anticipated costs.
